Help the labour movement declare Hot Cargo on Israel
Israel continues its campaign of ethnic cleansing across the region, applying the “Gaza” model of razing entire towns to the ground in Lebanon, as it continues its genocide in Palestine.
It’s time to declare Israeli goods, services, and institutional partnerships as Hot Cargo across the labour movement. Will you help your union join the international picket line?
JOIN OR HELP START A HOT CARGO CAUCUS IN YOUR UNION
You can join a Labour for Palestine (L4P) caucus in your union or help form one if there isn’t one already. You can work with your caucus on submitting a resolution to your next convention and organize with delegates to win the passage of the resolution. This is part of how we win.
Four federations of labour (New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Ontario, and Newfoundland and Labrador), along with many locals, labour councils and unions (the latest being CUPE Manitoba) have already endorsed Hot Cargo resolutions, including calls to cut ties with Israel’s so-called labour central, the racist Histadrut, as the CLC recently did. We won these gains because L4P supporters like you stepped forward and organized in their unions.
L4P now has caucuses in 9 unions and sectors (BCGEU, CUPE, OPSEU, PSAC, Unifor, Canadian Nurses, Ontario Education Workers, CAPE, AMAPCEO, CUPW). If you’re not a member of one of these unions or sectors, you can help build the movement by starting an L4P caucus in yours.
Major unions holding policy conventions and conferences in the next 18 months include: Unifor, the Ontario Secondary School Teachers' Federation, the BC General Employees' Union, the Canadian Union of Postal Workers, the Public Service Alliance of Canada, and the Canadian Federation of Nurses Unions, as well as the provincial labour federations in Saskatchewan, BC, PEI, Alberta, and Manitoba.
We need to intervene in as many of these union decision-making spaces as we can to encourage those conventions to declare Hot Cargo on Israel. You can directly impact how many we are able to influence.
Canadian workers helped end apartheid in South Africa. We supported East Timorese liberation. We took a stand against war in Iraq. Now is the time to take a stand for Palestine.
The Canadian government remains complicit, but as workers we can put a stop to that complicity in our workplaces.
Declaring Israeli military goods, services, and relationships, as Hot Cargo is how we answer the call from Palestinian workers and help stop the genocide. Will you help end the complicity?
